1950'S ADVERTISING JIGSAW

This is an advert for Creamola custard, made as an advertising give-away in the 1950's. The jigsaw is complete and in good condition. It comes in its original box which is in very good condition; although one flap of the lid has been torn off it is present. PRICE: £12.00

THE COUNTRY POST OFFICE

This is a nice little (10" x 15") jigsaw of 250 pieces showing a lovely, nostalgic rural scene. The puzzle is by an unknown maker and made of plywood. It comes in a very nice old chocolate box by Tobler. Unfortunately there are two pieces missing (one edge, one in the building on the left) but it was a great jigsaw to do! PRICE: £25.00

RITA HAYWORTH!!! - BIJOU SERIES CARD JIGSAW

This little box of pieces has never been opened and contains a picture of Rita Hayworth in "The Loves of Carmen". It appears to have been part of a series called STARS OF THE SCREEN and was made by Tower which was made around 1948. As it hasn't been opened, I haven't done the puzzle and I am assuming that the puzzle is complete. PRICE: £8.00

AN AMERICAN POST OFFICE - 19TH CENTURY STYLE

This is a really nice puzzle of around 150 pieces but don't be fooled into thinking it will take you an hour or so! This little jigsaw is diabolically difficult (at least that's the way I found it). The picture appears to be by someone called Oliverly but I can't find anyone by that name on the internet and am wondering whether part of it was left off in the printing. Anyway, it's a nostalgic little scene with an old man wearing a stove-pipe hat sitting in a chair while the world (in the shape of a little girl and her dog) do their errands in the post office. I particularly like the portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on the post office walls. PRICE: £20.00

HIS MAJESTY'S YACHT by FRANK H. MASON

This is an AVN Jones puzzle of 300 pieces of His Majesty's Yacht. I'm not sure which Majesty it is since I can't find out anything about this picture except what it says on the box which is that it is from an original painting by Frank H. Mason, RBA. The puzzle is complete and it's a good picture of various ships/boats/yachts (I never can tell the difference!) There are one or two broken knobs which are present and overall the puzzle is in very good condition. PRICE: £35.00

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT

This is a real collector's piece - a complete late 19th century puzzle in its original box with a story book included. The illustrator is Randolph Caldecott, the engraver Edmund Evans. The box and puzzle belonged to a young lady called Beatrice whose name is on the lid together with the date 1883. PRICE: £150.00

ACADEMY PUZZLE OF DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN

This is a gorgeous small jigsaw by Salmon of the Loch Promenade in Douglas. The picture was originally painted by someone called A.R. Quinton in the early part of the 20th century. It shows the horse trams, tourists, buildings and sailing boats with a bit of the harbour. This is an 85 piece puzzle, complete and in good condition. The original box is here, but in a relatively poor state. PRICE: £10.00 reserved

SOUTH NOTTS HUNT

This jigsaw came at the same time as Silvery Moon and in the same type of box. It appears to be a photo of a group of people setting out for a day's hunting. There are over 350 pieces and it is complete though there is one piece with a broken knob which is present. PRICE: £40.00

THE SPORT'S TRAIN

This is a Hall-Court puzzle showing some 1930's skiers going to their ski resort. The picture is absolutely gorgeous! It made me want to join them, though I wouldn't normally even think about it, as my old bones would probably break just looking at a ski slope! There are 150 pieces, it's complete and in its original box. PRICE: £20.00

THE MATTERHORN

This is another small (108 piece) puzzle probably cut by an amateur or a cutter for a small company. I had a fair few cut by the same person but have sold most of them. PRICE: £10.00

FAIREY SWORDFISH AIRCRAFT by VICTORY

This is a 125 piece jigsaw by Victory, produced in about 1950 which is complete and in very good condition. The box is original but someone made a round hole in it at sometime and has taped back the cut out from the inside (around the propeller in the photo of the box lid). PRICE: £15.00

SALMON - CRUSADERS PUZZLE - 1934

I am guessing that this puzzle is by Salmon from the cut as it isn't in its original box. There are 60 pieces and it's from a painting by H. Jakes Jones. I was very taken with this puzzle, even if it is for children. PRICE: £10.00

GWR - GLORIOUS DEVON

A nice puzzle of around 150 pieces showing a view along the Devon coast, possibly Clovelly Bay. The gorse is in flower and you can almost feel the heat of the summer's day. The puzzle was published sometime between 1930 and 1933, is complete (although one piece has very slight paper loss) and it comes in its original Series 1 black box with a colour guide picture. PRICE: sold

CHLOE PRESTON - THE HAPPY FAMILY

This is an early Victory 150 piece jigsaw. The picture on the front of the box is of a mum, dad and daughter dressed in 20's clothes doing a jigsaw together with a very fetching yellow and grey wallpaper in the background. The puzzle, as you can see, is of typical Chloe Preston children playing with dolls and babies in a pram. There is one small knob missing to the right and a piece of paper missing from half a piece. PRICE: £15.00

CHAD VALLEY - MAID OF WALES

This is one of those post-war "Come to Britain" jigsaws which were produced around 1952. It consists of 500 wooden pieces and measures 19 x 21 inches. It is in its original green and white box with a black and white guide picture. It is colourful and a challenge - particularly the green background. PRICE: £60.00

WORLD MAP between 1922-1937

This is a map produced by Geo. Philip & Son sometime between the above dates....I know this because it has the Irish Free State on it. It is complete and in quite good condition with a little foxing. There is no original box so I'm not certain who the maker is. PRICE: £25.00

THE OLD MILL - SOLID MAHOGANY

This is a very pretty 300 piece jigsaw - missing two, unfortunately. It is contained in an old hosiery box but has the original top of the box lid with it. There's no manufacturer's name and I would guess that this was made around 1920. It is a push-fit puzzles with a few whimsies. PRICE: £35.00

MV ASTURIAS

This is a small (150 piece) puzzle with an old travel poster by Kenneth Shoesmith as the picture. It shows the MV Asturias and a smaller boat bringing either people waiting to board it or supplies including fresh produce. Along the bottom of the picture is written the name of the ship and some details about it. When I first did this jigsaw three years ago, there were three pieces missing. Later I found all three pieces in jigsaws that came in the same lot so now it's complete and very attractive. PRICE: £25.00

ACADEMY - WOODEN WALLS

This is a good looking and interesting jigsaw. It is part of Academy's Super-Cut range and, as such, is more difficult than their usual ones. The ships and sails in this are colour- cut while the sea and sky pieces are interlocking. As a "colour" person (one who does jigsaws mainly by colour) I found this one especially difficult - though I am learning how to go by shape, as well! There are 300 pieces to this puzzle with one piece and five lobes missing. They are in the original box. It was made sometime in the late 20's/early 30's by J. Salmon Ltd of Sevenoaks. PRICE: £30.00

CECIL RHODES

This is a very blue(!) jigsaw, made by AVN Jones in the 1930's and part of their South African Series. It pictures a man (Cecil Rhodes, himself?) looking over the place Rhodes chose to be buried. There are 150 pieces in good condition and in their original box. PRICE: £20.00
