FOR A DESCRIPTION OF THE ABOVE JIGSAW, SEE NEXT PAGE. FOR A NEWLY ADDED HOLTZAPFFEL, SCROLL DOWN!!

I AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP WITH JIGSAW RELATED QUESTIONS. MY PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESS, WHICH CAN BE USED NOW OR AFTER THE MIDDLE OF MAY IS: candylovegrove@hotmail.com. DO WRITE THIS SOMEWHERE AND KEEP IT FOR LATER! WHY? WELL I'M SORRY TO INFORM YOU THAT I WILL BE CLOSING DOWN NOSTALGIAGAMES AS OF THE MIDDLE OF MAY. AS I HAVE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED, IT IS GETTING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO FIND GOOD OLD WOODEN JIGSAWS AT A REASONABLE PRICE. AS WELL AS THAT, I WILL BE 71 IN APRIL AND AM FINDING THE SEARCH FOR PUZZLES AND THE SERVICING OF THE SITE TAKES UP LOTS OF TIME THAT I WOULD RATHER USE DOING OTHER THINGS. IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE RUNNING AN ONLINE SHOP AND IT HAS HELPED WITH FINANCES, TOO, BUT MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING! I WISH THAT I HAD DISCOVERED OLD WOODEN JIGSAWS WHEN I WAS A LOT YOUNGER BUT AM GLAD THAT I DID FIND THEM, EVENTUALLY. IT'S BEEN A GOOD TEN YEARS OR SO! I WON'T GIVE UP DOING JIGSAWS AND I MAY EVEN BE FOUND SELLING THEM ON EBAY! IN THE MEANTIME, WE ARE IN THE (SLOW) PROCESS OF DOING ANOTHER PUZZLE OF OVER 1200 PIECES AND I'LL BE ADDING THAT WHEN WE'VE FINISHED IT. UPDATE ON THE PUZZLE WE STARTED A LOOOOOONGGGG TIME AGO, IT SEEMS. IT IS POSSIBLY THE MOST DIFFICULT PUZZLE WE HAVE DONE.

WE FINISHED IT! UNBELIEVABLY, FOR A JIGSAW FROM THE 20'S OR 30'S, THERE IS ONLY ONE PIECE MISSING ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL REMADE PIECES. I WILL BE ADDING IT LATER THIS EVENING OR TOMORROW MORNING. WATCH THIS PAGE!

(I THOUGHT IT WAS A GRAPHIC GALLERY PUZZLE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE! IT'S A GOOD ONE, THOUGH TIME-CONSUMING.)

BELOW YOU WILL FIND A SELECTION OF NOSTALGIC ITEMS FOR SALE INCLUDING GAME BOARDS AND A FEW ANTIQUE GAMES. LOOK AT ALL THE OTHER PAGES AS WELL....LOADS OF VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE ITEMS! THE FOLLOWING THREE PAGES ARE VINTAGE JIGSAWS ALTHOUGH YOU WILL FIND A FEW ON THIS PAGE, TOO.

Bedouins

BEDOUINS

This is the very difficult puzzle we have been working on for the last couple of weeks - finally finished. It was missing three pieces which have been remade (well, though not professionally) and there are a few other remade pieces which were present when we started and were probably made by the library that this puzzle comes from. There are around 540 pieces, backed with mahogany (except for the remade pieces). The jigsaw measures around 15.5" x 20". The pieces come in their original green drawstring bag and cardboard box. The photo is slightly blurred though not bad - the picture on the puzzle is not blurred! We really enjoyed doing this although there were times when we thought there must be too many missing to bother with and times when we could spend an hour and still not find any two that fit together! Very Enjoyable! PRICE: 65.00 SOLD

Red skies at night and morn

RED SKY AT NIGHT AND MORN

This is another puzzle by the same cutter as Spanish Dancer though not such a fabulous picture. This one is of more than 325 pieces with one missing (lower picture, grass). There are 3 very small bits of paper loss (on three pegs in the middle) and one small piece broken off but present. The cutting of these puzzles is so lovely that I would like to know who did them. There is one clue (which I have also noted elsewhere) - the name EJ (or Ethel J) Curtis appears on the bottoms of several of the boxes and it could be she who is so adept at cutting in her very own style. I am always pleased when I find these puzzles! PRICE: 50.00 (I realise this photo is too small for a good look so email for a better one!)

26 round pic and alphabet

A SET OF 26 CIRCULAR HEAVY CARDS

These cards, which were probably originally made for teaching the alphabet, are just gorgeous! Each letter of the alphabet is illustrated with a wild animal and, on the backs of the cards, there is a paragraph about that animal. My favourite might be the Unicorn! They are in excellent condition. PRICE: 25.00 reserved for Sarah

FEEDING THE WHITE CART HORSE

This is a wonderful old jigsaw, c.1900, cut in a very interesting style and showing a very pretty picture of a young woman feeding a large horse in its stable. There are about 110 pieces with one sadly missing (upper right corner) and a small nib which I believe must have been lost during cutting. The pieces arrived (and have remained) in an old chocolate box. PRICE: 15.00
Feeding the white horse

Pot-in-Egg

POT - IN - EGG

This game is by an unknown British manufacturer and very similar to that old favourite, "Pop-in-Taw". There are four wooden 'shovels', eight 'eggs' and six 'egg cups'. The object is to place your eggs in the cups. The rule sheet is in the box which is complete. The paper covering of the box is a little torn though mostly correct. PRICE: 25.00

Man with parrots holtzapffel

HOLTZAPFFEL! GORGEOUS JIGSAW - MAN WITH PARROTS

This is great! It's a 500+ piece Holtzapffel "Figure-it-Out" puzzle of a man in a hat holding two gorgeous parrots with a ship and trees in the background. The puzzle came in a Holtzapffel box but with no mention of its contents and we were perplexed much of the time about the placing of the figures. In the end, we worked it out. It is, sadly, missing two pieces but they aren't vital to the overall effect. It measures approximately 24" wide by 24" tall at the tallest point. PRICE: 300.00 Reserved for RV

Electroulette

ELECTROULETTE

This is a game by Kay dating from the 1950's I would imagine. I have just spent an hour or so making sure it works well - and it does! The six bulbs light up at the right time, the circuits now work and there is a brand-new battery, too. You will notice a little extra padding in the battery area which holds the battery in place and makes it work properly. The little switch has to be held down to help the circuit connect at the right time but all in all this game is very attractive and usable. The box is good with just a little scuffing on the corners. PRICE: 35.00

skittles with faces

SKITTLES WITH FACES

This is a nice little set of painted skittles. The faces and buttons have been put on with a rubber stamp, the bodies painted yellow with other colours on top. There are three wooden balls to throw at the skittles though one or possibly two are probably replacements - but still quite old. The box is in good but used condition and it comes from around the 20's or 30's. PRICE: 45.00

Wild Duck Shooting

WILD DUCK SHOOTING

This puzzle comes in an anonymous box with the title and number of pieces hand-written on a label stuck to the lid. I should imagine it was cut by Robert Plumb or at least in his style. There are 100 pieces in this complete little puzzle. There are a few bits of insect-nibbled paper missing. PRICE: 12.00

cARD houses

CARD HOUSES GAME

This game was made by Spears, manufactured when they still had a factory in Bavaria (before about 1920, I would guess). The box is in reasonable condition with one short edge torn at the corners and a small part of one of the longer edges missing. Inside the box are a range of cards illustrated with items of everyday life in Edwardian England which can be slotted together to make buildings and another set of plain cards which are used to form 'floors'. The inside of the lid contains directions for various types of buildings that can be built. All but one of the cards are in excellent condition as is the lower part of the box. PRICE: 25.00 SOLD

Lodnon to Edinburgh board

"THE FLYING SCOTSMAN" OR

THE NORTH EXPRESS FROM LONDON TO EDINBURGH.

This is a game board which is rare and lovely! It was designed in England and printed and made in Bavaria which is all the info I have as the manufacturer didn't add their name. It is on a four-fold board which, when opened is 26" long and closes to a board 6" x 9" approx.
The object of the game must be to reach Edinburgh from London by one of three railway stations - Euston, St Pancras or Kings Cross - and by one of three railways - L.& N.W.R., M.R or G.N.R. There are numbers along each of the rails which probably relates to throws of a die. The winner would be the first to reach Waverley Station in Edinburgh. The board is in good condition though the fabric holding the folds together is fragile and split in one or two places. The outer coverins is a wood grain paper, the inner (game) side has chromolithograph pictures of London and Edinburgh as well as the three lines. It's a great board! PRICE: 25.00

Old Victory Dutch garden and fountain

EARLY VICTORY PUZZLE - DUTCH GARDEN AND FOUNTAIN

This is a gorgeous, little, complete (except for one broken knob which is present), early Victory jigsaw. It's a GOLD BOX "Artistic" puzzle with whimsies and about 250 pieces altogether. The box is original and has an early label but, surprisingly, a lift-off top instead of the usual hinge. PRICE: 30.00

Alnwick castle

ALNWICK CASTLE

This black and white jigsaw was really fun to do! It's partly interlocking and mostly non-interlocking and with no colour, there were few clues as to which piece went where. I got quite good at spotting the right shape - those who have been reading my site notes know that I'm not much good at shape and am not too bad at colour. We had no idea of what the picture would look like and were pleasantly surprised by the outcome. There are just over 400 pieces with one re-made in wood professionally before I bought it; there is also one small bit of one knob broken off and lost. The measurements of the finished puzzle are 23.5" x 16.5". PRICE: 55.00

Chad Valley Table Croquet

CHAD VALLEY - EDWARDIAN TABLE CROQUET GAME

This is a lovely little set of table croquet contained in its original box. The set consists of 4 wooden mallets, 4 balls of different colours (some paint missing), 2 wooden 'pegs', painted with four coloured stripes, and 6 brass hoops with bases which make them stand on your table. The instructions are in the lid. Everything is in good, used condition. PRICE: 30.00

The lonely Common

THE LONELY COMMON

This is quite an early Chad Valley puzzle in a box covered with 'crazy paving' paper. (The label says it is made by Chad Valley and is "made of unbreakable material forming coloured picture)! The complete puzzle of about 150 pieces shows a common with a town in the distance. The picture was painted by David Sherrin. PRICE: 20.00

Studdy dog with tin of salmon

A STUDDY DOG

This is one of those smaller jigsaws I bought recently. The picture is of a dog by Studdy which I think might be Bonzo, though he looks a little different from most of the pictures of Bonzo that I've seen. There are around 70 pieces including one with a little broken knob which is present and a very small bit of another piece which is missing (could be a cutting error). The puzzle measures approx. 7" x 5.25" and is by an unknown maker. PRICE: 16.00

CANDY IN THANET TIMES
